Primary platelet transfusions were performed on 40 patients in the reginal hospital
around Daejon area with the platelet concentrates(PC) or platelet rich plasmas(PRP)
supplied by the Daejon Red Cross Blood Center over the period of April, 1982 to March,
1983, after which a clinical study was made on the subject concerning the platelet count
change in the blood samples of the patients.
The average platelet count in the blood samples of the patients prior to the primary
transfusion was 2.6×104/mm3. This count was increased to
5.7×104/mm3, 24 hours after the transfusion of, on the
average, 3.6 units of PC or PRP. Using the nomogram based on the Shitayama formula,
the calculated number of needed units of PC or PRP was obtained for each patient.
The average ratio of the empirical amount of PC or PRP needed to the calculated
amount was then sought, and was found to be 1.1.
